Hi! I'm Dr. Roz
You have the power to make an impact in your life, career, and relationships. My goal is to help you unlock the path.
Let’s be real. You’re ambitious, self-aware, maybe even a little “too put together.” But when it comes to love, your picker seems… broken.
You keep attracting partners who are hot and cold. Or emotionally distant. Or charming but inconsistent. Maybe they can’t commit, don’t listen, or somehow always make you feel like too much and not enough at the same time.
And part of you wonders—is it me?
At Nu Leaf Therapy, we hear this story all the time. And no, you’re not doomed to repeat it forever. But to reset your relationship patterns, you’ve got to understand where they come from.
What Does “Emotionally Unavailable” Even Mean?
It’s not just about ghosting or refusing to commit.
Emotionally unavailable partners often:
- Struggle to express or tolerate vulnerable emotions
- Shut down or get defensive during conflict
- Dismiss or minimize your needs
- Avoid intimacy—emotional, physical, or both
- Give mixed signals (hot one day, cold the next)
They may not be bad people—but they aren’t able (or willing) to meet you emotionally. And if this is your type? There’s a reason.
You’re Not “Broken”—Here’s Why You Might Be Attracted to These Partners
Choosing emotionally unavailable people isn’t a moral failing. It’s a pattern. One that often forms from:
- Childhood attachment wounds
- Trauma or emotional neglect
- Family dynamics where love had to be earned
- Internalized beliefs like “I’m too much” or “I have to fix others to be worthy of love”
You may be unconsciously drawn to familiar pain—not because it feels good, but because it feels known.
The Trauma Loop: How Old Wounds Shape New Choices
This is where things get deeper. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why do I stay even when I know it’s not healthy?”, you might be stuck in a trauma loop.
What is a trauma loop?
It’s when your nervous system stays wired in survival mode—attracting situations that mirror past emotional injuries. You might:
- Confuse intensity for intimacy
- Mistake anxiety for chemistry
- Feel uncomfortable with calm, secure love
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. It’s part of being human. But you can learn to choose differently.
The High-Achieving Woman’s Dilemma
Here’s a nuance we see often at Nu Leaf Therapy, especially in clients from Mississippi, Texas, and Florida: you’re a high-achiever. You’ve learned to handle everything. You’re the one everyone else leans on.
But here’s the cost:
- You tolerate too much
- You think “doing the work” means fixing the relationship alone
- You downplay your needs to keep the peace
- You pick projects instead of partners
And eventually? You burn out.
You don’t need another relationship to fix. You need one that feels safe.
Signs You’re in a Relationship Loop
If you’re wondering whether you’re stuck in a cycle, here’s a quick self-check:
Loop Sign | How It Shows Up |
You fall fast and hard | But it fizzles quickly or turns into chaos |
You feel emotionally exhausted | But can’t let go |
You ignore red flags | And later feel blindsided |
You try to “earn” love | Through overgiving, caretaking, or pleasing |
You feel stuck or numb | Like you’re on autopilot in relationships |
Still unsure? Take our free emotional health quiz to uncover what loop you might be in.
How to Begin Breaking the Pattern
You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge—but you also don’t have to figure it all out alone. Here’s how to start:
1. Get Curious, Not Critical
Ask yourself: What did I learn about love growing up? What felt “normal,” even if it hurt? Patterns are protective, not shameful.
2. Build Emotional Awareness
Begin noticing your body’s signals. Does your chest tighten when you don’t get a text back? That’s data. Noticing is the first step to choosing differently.
3. Reconnect with Yourself First
The most emotionally available partner you’ll ever have? You. Practice self-intimacy. Start by checking in with your own needs daily—without judgment.
4. Seek a Trauma-Informed Therapist
You deserve support from someone who gets it. Who sees the deeper loops and helps you untangle them with compassion and expertise.
Try This: The Emotional Availability Self-Check
Take a quiet moment. Ask yourself:
- When someone gets close, do I want to pull away?
- Do I find myself chasing people who don’t choose me?
- Do I fear being “too much” or “too needy”?
- Do I shut down instead of speak up?
- Do I feel safe being fully seen by someone?
If you answered yes to more than two, you might be caught in a self-protective pattern. That’s not a flaw—it’s a clue. And it’s one we explore in therapy.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.
The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.
Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. We tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to estimate how long it will take. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
We are so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
